We are a group of engineers/scientists in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, focused on understanding the interplay between mechanical and biochemical cues from the cellular microenvironment on cellular behavior during normal homeostasis and progression of disease. In our approach, we engineer cells and their microenvironment into model systems that allow us to systematically understand cellular and tissue mechanobiology in the context of health and disease. We also integrate various types of microscopy, cell mechanics assays, computational image analysis, and physics principles to quantify cell phenotypes and behaviors.
