We recently had two papers accepted for publication. Our paper in collaboration with the Kontrogianni lab at the University Maryland School of Medicine will appear in Oncogene and demonstrates that loss of giant obscurins from breast epithelial cells promotes invasion, migration, and metastasis. Congratulations to first author Marey Shriver and our collaborative team!
The second paper is now available online in PLOS ONE and describes how tumor cells incorporate into the endothelium prior to trans-endothelial migration. This leads to physical displacement of endothelial cells and removal of VE-cadherin from the cell-cell contacts. This process is in contrast to leukocytes, which transmigrate through a tiny pore in the endothelium and in normal conditions do not disrupt the endothelium. Congratulations to my co-first author, Susan Hamilla, and my Ph.D. advisor, Helim Aranda-Espinoza!
