I was invited to speak at Belvedere Elementary's fourth grade "Career Day." I talked about my career trajectory, what physics and bioengineering are, what cells are, and the experiments I do to understand how cells move. I also showed the students pictures of my office desk, lab bench, the cell culture hood, microscope, and my labmates. Of course, I also showed them movies of neutrophils and cancer cells migrating in various engineered microenvironments. These fourth graders were an incredibly attentive and interactive audience - they were full of excellent questions and excitement from start to finish! I'll have to recruit some of them when I open my own lab... I'm hoping my presentation inspired some of them to become bioengineers - their energy and enthusiasm certainly inspired me!
