Today our lab hosted 4 female middle school students through the Engineering Your Future program, led by Helim Aranda-Espinoza (Associate Professor, UMD BIOE). Our day started out with each lab member discussing his/her path to Bioengineering, followed by a question and answer session. Then we headed over to the lab and gave a brief lab tour and lab demos of microfluidic device fabrication, cell culture, and microscopy. The students also made their own PDMS "souvenirs." After lunch and some frisbee, we went back to the lab and spent the afternoon learning about "Biomechanics of the Big and Small" through a microscopy tutorial and prosthetic leg building activity. Shown below are the girls holding their PDMS souvenirs, along with Marina testing out the prosthetic leg they built!
